Week 4 of 14
David and the divided kingdom
Days 22 to 28: 1 Samuel 14 to 2 Kings 19, 83 chapters.
The kingdom reaches its height and then splits. David is anointed, hunted by Saul, and finally crowned. In 2 Samuel 7 God promises David a house and a throne that will last forever; hold on to that chapter, because the prophets and the Gospels lean on it. David's sin with Bathsheba sets off trouble inside his own family. Solomon builds the temple, then turns away, and the kingdom breaks in two. Elijah and Elisha confront the kings of the north, and by the end of the week Assyria has carried the northern kingdom away.
Watch for God's promise to David in 2 Samuel 7.
But the LORD said to Samuel, “Don’t look on his face, or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him; for I don’t see as man sees. For man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.”1 Samuel 16:7
